Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – City Tour & Wetland Birding

Arrive at Kigali International Airport, where your birding guide will meet and transfer you to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, you’ll enjoy an introductory birding session at Nyarutarama or Nyandungu Eco Park, known for species like the Abyssinian Ground Thrush, Grey-capped Warbler, and Cisticolas.

Evening briefing and welcome dinner.

Day 2: Kigali – Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

After breakfast, depart for Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of Africa’s most important birding hotspots. En route, visit the Nyanza King’s Palace Museum for a touch of culture.

Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon, set on the edge of the forest. Evening birding walk around the lodge grounds, with chances to spot Mountain Yellow Warbler, White-tailed Blue Flycatcher, and Bronze Sunbird.

Day 3: Full Day Birding in Nyungwe Forest National Park

After an early breakfast, set off for a full day of birding in Nyungwe — home to over 300 bird species and 27 Albertine Rift endemics. Expect to spot species such as:

  • Ruwenzori Turaco
  • Grauer’s Rush Warbler
  • Regal Sunbird
  • Handsome Francolin
  • Red-collared Mountain Babbler

Break for lunch and continue birding along the Uwinka and Kamiranzovu trails, accompanied by the soothing sounds of the rainforest.

Day 4: Canopy Walk & Transfer to Lake Kivu

After breakfast, enjoy a morning Canopy Walk — a perfect vantage point for spotting canopy dwellers like the Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher, Bar-tailed Trogon, and Dusky Crimsonwing.

After lunch, depart for Lake Kivu (approx. 3 hours), arriving in Kibuye for a relaxing lakeside evening with optional birding near the shore.

Day 5: Transfer to Akagera National Park – Afternoon Birding Safari

After breakfast, drive northeast to Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s savannah birding gem. Upon arrival, embark on an afternoon birding safari across the rolling plains and wetlands — home to over 480 bird species, including:

  • Shoebill Stork
  • Papyrus Gonolek
  • Grey Crowned Crane
  • Red-faced Barbet
  • Long-crested Eagle

Overnight: Akagera Game Lodge / Ruzizi Tented Lodge

Day 6: Morning Birding Boat Safari – Return to Kigali / Departure

Enjoy a boat safari on Lake Ihema, a highlight of Akagera birding. Spot African Jacanas, Kingfishers, Cormorants, Fish Eagles, and flocks of Open-billed Storks.

After lunch, begin your drive back to Kigali with scenic stops and photography moments along the way. Drop-off at your hotel or Kigali International Airport.
